How does potassium chloride + sodium chloride work?
Potassium supports electrical signalling in nerves and contraction of heart, skeletal and smooth muscle. Sodium and chloride help regulate extracellular fluid, osmotic pressure and acid–base balance. Intravenous administration puts these electrolytes directly into the circulation so potassium can be restored under laboratory and heart-rhythm monitoring.
How to take potassium chloride + sodium chloride
Administered by trained hospital staff through a central venous line using an infusion pump. It must not be mixed with other medicines, and partly used containers are discarded.
It is not swallowed and food does not affect its administration.
Do not handle or adjust the infusion pump yourself.
Tell staff promptly if the line becomes painful, red, swollen or wet.

Get urgent medical advice
- High potassium, which may cause muscle weakness, numbness, confusion or an abnormal heartbeat.
- Heart-rhythm disturbances, particularly if the infusion enters too quickly.
- Fluid or electrolyte imbalance, including swelling, breathing difficulty or acid–base disturbance.
- Pain, venous irritation or thrombophlebitis at the infusion site.
- Severe tissue injury if the solution leaks outside the vein.
potassium chloride + sodium chloride in pregnancy
Pregnancy data for this product are limited. It should be used only when clinically needed after the prescriber weighs benefits and risks. Particular caution is required with pre-eclampsia because of the sodium and fluid load.

The product can be used during breastfeeding when clinically needed. Treatment still requires individual assessment and electrolyte monitoring.

Potassium-sparing diuretics, including spironolactone and triamterene
Combined use can raise potassium excessively and increase the risk of dangerous heart-rhythm disturbances.
ACE inhibitors and angiotensin-receptor blockers
These can reduce potassium excretion, increasing the risk of hyperkalaemia.
NSAIDs
They may increase potassium and sodium retention, contributing to hyperkalaemia or oedema.
