What is human fibrinogen used for?
The UK products have overlapping but different licences.
Treatment of bleeding in people with congenital hypofibrinogenaemia or afibrinogenaemia who have a bleeding tendency.
Prevention of excessive bleeding around surgery in congenital fibrinogen deficiency: licensed for FIBRYGA and FibCLOT.
Complementary treatment of uncontrolled severe haemorrhage caused by acquired hypofibrinogenaemia during surgery: licensed for FIBRYGA.
How does human fibrinogen work?
Thrombin converts fibrinogen into fibrin. Fibrin strands form a stable mesh within the developing clot; replacing deficient fibrinogen temporarily improves clot formation and firmness.

How to take human fibrinogen
Human fibrinogen is reconstituted with water for injections and administered into a vein under specialist supervision. The solution is checked for cloudiness, deposits or discolouration and is not mixed with other medicines. Food does not affect intravenous administration.
Reconstitution and administration instructions differ between products.
The product name and batch number should be recorded.

Common or expected effects
- Headache is reported commonly with FibCLOT.
- Fever or raised temperature; estimated frequency varies by product and clinical setting.
- Dizziness, vomiting, rash, feeling hot and inflammation of the infused vein.

- Allergic or anaphylactic reactions, including breathing difficulty, wheeze, facial or throat swelling, low blood pressure or collapse.
- Blood clots, including deep-vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and heart attack.

Controlled pregnancy studies are unavailable. Experience with fibrinogen concentrates in obstetric complications has not suggested harm, but treatment requires specialist assessment of the expected benefits and risks. People with inherited fibrinogen deficiency should plan pregnancy with their haematology and maternity teams.
