Why should concomitant use of safinamide with fluoxetine or fluvoxamine be avoided?

Safinamide with fluoxetine or fluvoxamine should be avoided because rare serious adverse reactions, including serotonin syndrome, have occurred when SSRIs and dextromethorphan were used with MAO inhibitors; if necessary, concomitant treatment should use the lowest effective dose.
