How does rubidium chloride rb-82 work?
Rb-82 behaves similarly to potassium and is carried to the heart muscle by the bloodstream. Viable heart cells take it up through sodium–potassium transport processes, so PET detects more signal where blood flow and cellular retention are preserved and less where perfusion is reduced or tissue is infarcted.
How to take rubidium chloride rb-82
This tracer is not taken at home. It is prepared from a radionuclide generator and infused into a vein by trained staff immediately before PET imaging.
Follow the imaging department’s fasting and caffeine restrictions; caffeine can reduce the response to the pharmacological stress medicine.
Give the department a complete list of prescribed, non-prescription and herbal products. Do not stop regular medicines unless the responsible clinical team tells you to.
Remain still and follow breathing or positioning instructions during imaging.
Afterwards, empty your bladder promptly and regularly for at least the next hour unless staff advise otherwise.
