How does peginterferon beta-1a work?
It binds to type I interferon receptors and changes immune-response gene activity, shifting signalling towards less inflammation and limiting movement of activated immune cells across the blood–brain barrier. Its complete mechanism in MS is not known. Pegylation prolongs its presence in the circulation compared with non-pegylated interferon beta-1a.
How to take peginterferon beta-1a
Use the prescribed device and route only after training from a healthcare professional. Let the device warm naturally to room temperature; do not use external heat. Check it is undamaged and that the solution is clear, colourless and particle-free.
Rotate injection sites. Subcutaneous sites include the abdomen, thigh and upper arm; the intramuscular site is the thigh.
Each pen or syringe is single use. Dispose of it in an approved sharps container.
Keep refrigerated in the original packaging, protected from light and do not freeze.

Interferon-beta pregnancy data do not indicate an increased risk of major congenital anomalies after exposure before conception or during the first trimester, although evidence later in pregnancy is more limited. Peginterferon beta-1a may be considered when clinically needed. Discuss pregnancy plans or an unexpected pregnancy promptly with the MS specialist.
