Water and electrolytes expand fluid outside cells, including circulating blood volume. Acetate and gluconate produce bicarbonate-forming substances, giving an alkalinising effect that can help correct non-severe acidosis.
How to take magnesium chloride hexahydrate + potassium chloride + sodium acetate trihydrate + sodium chloride + sodium gluconate
It is administered into a vein using sterile equipment by trained staff. The solution and bag should be checked before use and should not be used if cloudy, discoloured, visibly particulate or damaged.
A peripheral vein may be used because the solution is iso-osmotic.
Tell staff promptly if the cannula becomes painful, red, swollen, wet or starts burning.
Partly used bags must not be reconnected or saved for later use.

- No adverse effects have a known common frequency. Effects reported at unknown frequency include infusion-site pain, burning, redness, swelling or vein inflammation.
- Fluid overload may cause swelling or breathlessness.

- Severe hypersensitivity or infusion reaction, including facial or throat swelling, wheezing, breathing difficulty, low blood pressure or collapse.
- Acute hyponatraemia, which may cause headache, confusion, drowsiness or seizures and can lead to brain swelling.
- High potassium, potentially causing weakness, abnormal heart rhythm, heart block or cardiac arrest.
- Venous thrombosis, infusion-site infection or leakage into surrounding tissue.
