Prescribing considerations

• Confirm a non-infectious allergic cause; lodoxamide is not an antimicrobial.
• Safety and effectiveness have not been established in children younger than 4 years.
• Benzalkonium chloride may aggravate dry eye or affect a compromised corneal surface.
• Transient blurred vision may occur; patients should wait until vision clears before driving.
• Use nasolacrimal occlusion or eyelid closure to limit systemic absorption.

Contraindications and cautions

• Known hypersensitivity to lodoxamide or any formulation component.

Monitoring

• Review persistent burning, stinging, pain or worsening ocular symptoms.
• Monitor the ocular surface during prolonged use, particularly in dry-eye disease or corneal compromise.
• Assess response and reconsider the diagnosis if symptoms fail to improve or suggest infection or another serious eye disorder.

Clinical pharmacology

Lodoxamide is a mast-cell stabiliser that inhibits type I immediate hypersensitivity reactions. It limits antigen-induced histamine and leukotriene release, partly by preventing stimulated calcium movement into mast cells.

Formulation and product differences

• The selected product is a preserved multidose eye-drop solution containing benzalkonium chloride.
• Soft contact lenses must be removed before administration because the preservative can be absorbed and alter lens colour.
• Keep the bottle upright and tightly closed; discard it one month after first opening.
