What is Iodinated povidone + isopropyl alcohol used for?
The selected product is licensed for antisepsis of intact skin before invasive medical procedures in adults and children aged at least one year.
Preparation of intact skin before surgery.
Preparation before vascular-catheter insertion, implant or prosthetic-device procedures, cardiac catheterisation and interventional radiology.
How does Iodinated povidone + isopropyl alcohol work?
Isopropyl alcohol rapidly damages microbial proteins. Iodine released from the povidone complex penetrates microorganisms and disrupts proteins, genetic material and cell membranes, providing broader and more persistent antiseptic activity.
How to take Iodinated povidone + isopropyl alcohol
This single-use cutaneous applicator is normally applied by a healthcare professional. Use only on intact skin, prevent pooling beneath the patient or in skin folds, remove soaked materials and let the area air-dry completely. Keep away from eyes, mucous membranes, wounds, the middle ear and neural tissue.
Activate the applicator once; do not repeatedly pump it.
Do not blot, wipe or cover excess wet solution before it has been managed safely.
If eye contact occurs, rinse promptly and thoroughly with water.
If removal is needed after the procedure, soap and water or alcohol may be used.

Get urgent medical advice
- Anaphylaxis or angioedema, with breathing difficulty or swelling.

Iodinated povidone + isopropyl alcohol in pregnancy
Use requires careful clinical assessment of benefits and risks. Although absorption through intact skin is usually small, iodine can enter the maternal circulation and may affect fetal or newborn thyroid function; monitoring may be considered after exposure.
Iodinated povidone + isopropyl alcohol while breastfeeding
Use requires careful clinical assessment because absorbed iodine may enter breast milk. Prevent the infant from licking or contacting treated skin; infant thyroid monitoring may sometimes be appropriate, particularly for younger or premature infants.
Iodinated povidone + isopropyl alcohol interactions
Tell the clinical team about medicines, dressings and antiseptics used on the same area and about planned thyroid investigations.
Mercury-containing disinfectants
Do not use together or immediately one after the other because mercury iodide may form and cause chemical burns.
Octenidine
Sequential or concurrent use can cause temporary dark discolouration.
Hydrogen peroxide or taurolidine
Oxidation may reduce antiseptic activity.
