How does topiramate affect GABA-mediated neurotransmission in neuronal studies?

In cultured neurons, topiramate increased the frequency of GABA activation of GABA_A receptors and enhanced GABA-induced chloride influx, suggesting potentiation of inhibitory neurotransmission; flumazenil did not block this effect, and topiramate did not increase channel opening duration.
