Sufentanil citrate is not recommended during pregnancy because it crosses the placenta and the fetal respiratory centre is sensitive to opiates; pregnancy data are absent or limited, animal studies show reproductive toxicity, and long-term treatment may cause newborn withdrawal symptoms.
