Why is metolazone generally avoided during the last trimester of pregnancy?

Metolazone must not be used during the last trimester unless absolutely necessary, then at the lowest recommended dose, because thiazide and related diuretics may reach the fetus and cause electrolyte imbalance, and neonatal thrombocytopenia has been reported.
