Aciclovir is usually taken several times daily and doses should be spaced through waking hours to maintain antiviral exposure. Adequate hydration is important, particularly in older patients or those at risk of renal adverse effects. Taking the whole dose at bedtime would be unsafe and ineffective. The course should be completed as prescribed unless adverse effects require review.
