Alendronic acid must be taken after waking with plain water, at least 30 minutes before food, drink or other medicines. The patient should remain upright to reduce oesophageal irritation. Calcium and levothyroxine can reduce absorption if taken close to alendronic acid. Crushing or mixing with juice is inappropriate.
