Digoxin distributes slowly from plasma into tissues, so an early post-dose sample can appear misleadingly high. Concentrations should usually be sampled at least 6 hours, preferably 8 to 12 hours, after a dose and interpreted with symptoms, ECG, renal function and electrolytes.
