Doxycycline can cause oesophageal irritation, so it should be taken with plenty of water while sitting or standing. The patient should avoid lying down soon after dosing. Divalent cations such as iron can reduce absorption, and milk may also reduce absorption. Sun sensitivity counselling is also appropriate.
