Systemic JIA can be complicated by macrophage activation syndrome, suggested by cytopenia, coagulopathy and very high ferritin. The other complications fit adult inflammatory or crystal diseases better than this syndrome. Early recognition is crucial because MAS can deteriorate rapidly.
