For a patient-request emergency supply, regulation 225 requires the pharmacist to confirm immediate need, prior prescribing and the appropriate dose. Most POMs may be supplied up to—but not automatically for—30 days. The pack must include the words “Emergency Supply”, and the pharmacy record includes the date, medicine and quantity, patient name and address, and nature of the emergency. A 72-hour follow-up prescription belongs to the prescriber-request route under regulation 224.
