Mesalazine (5-ASA) can cause interstitial nephritis, and renal function monitoring is recommended before starting treatment, at 3 months, then annually during maintenance therapy. The BNF advises monitoring renal function in all patients receiving aminosalicylates. Blood disorders (agranulocytosis, aplastic anaemia) are rare but patients should be advised to report unexplained bleeding, bruising, or sore throat.
