Fluoroquinolones including ciprofloxacin carry a risk of tendon disorders including tendinitis and tendon rupture, particularly of the Achilles tendon. The MHRA has issued safety warnings about this risk, and patients should be counselled to stop the medication and seek medical attention immediately if they develop tendon pain, swelling, or inflammation. The risk is increased in patients over 60, those on corticosteroids, and those with renal impairment.
