Correct answer: CHe should take doxycycline with plenty of water and remain upright to reduce the risk of oesophageal irritation, and avoid excessive sun exposure

Doxycycline can cause oesophageal irritation and ulceration if it lodges in the oesophagus. Patients should take it with a full glass of water and remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 30 minutes after taking it. Additionally, tetracyclines cause photosensitivity, so patients should be advised to avoid excessive sun exposure and use appropriate sunscreen regardless of weather. Doxycycline can be taken with food.
