The odontogenic keratocyst has the greatest characteristic recurrence risk among the listed cysts. Recurrence is treatment-dependent, but systematic-review evidence reports substantial recurrence, particularly after simple enucleation. Contributing factors include its thin, fragile lining, which can be difficult to remove intact, and residual epithelial islands, daughter cysts or epithelial budding within the cyst wall. Dentigerous, radicular and residual cysts are not characteristically associated with a comparable recurrence tendency after adequate treatment. A conventional lateral periodontal cyst also has a low recurrence rate; its botryoid variant is more recurrent but is a distinct entity and is not listed. “Keratocystic odontogenic tumour” has been removed because current WHO classification uses odontogenic keratocyst.
