A preformed metal crown is indicated for a restorable primary molar following pulpotomy because full coronal coverage provides a durable seal and improves the prognosis of the pulp-treated tooth. SDCEP advises placing the crown at the same appointment. Crowns are also commonly used for advanced or multisurface caries in primary molars and selected developmental defects. A small occlusal lesion in a low-risk child usually permits a more conservative restoration. Small lesions in primary incisors and uncomplicated enamel fractures of permanent incisors are normally treated with tooth-coloured adhesive materials where required. A preformed stainless steel crown is not an appropriate definitive crown for an adult premolar.
