A Nabers probe is used to assess the extent of furcation involvement in multi-rooted teeth. Its curved working end facilitates entry into the furcation and assessment of horizontal penetration. SDCEP grades furcation involvement from grade 1, where the furcation opening is detectable but involvement is less than one-third of the tooth width, to grade 3, where the probe passes completely through the furcation. Probing pocket depth is normally recorded with a periodontal probe walked around the gingival margin. Tooth mobility is assessed using rigid instrument handles, while caries detection and overjet measurement require different examination instruments.
