The correct answer is E. Satellite or daughter cysts and epithelial buds may lie within the fibrous wall beyond the main cystic lumen. They can therefore remain after apparently complete enucleation and subsequently give rise to recurrence. Their presence is associated with a substantially increased recurrence risk. Amyloid with epithelial calcification suggests a calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumour; haemorrhage-associated giant cells suggest a central giant cell lesion; mucous and ciliated cells are features of a glandular odontogenic cyst; and ghost cells with dentinoid suggest a calcifying odontogenic cyst. These are differential histopathological patterns rather than mechanisms of odontogenic keratocyst recurrence.
