A is correct. In traditional histological classification, a true denticle resembles dentine, with organised tubular architecture and an odontoblast-like peripheral lining. A false denticle is classically described as a less organised or concentrically laminated calcified mass deposited around a nidus such as degenerating cells, collagen or a vessel. Attachment to the pulpal wall does not distinguish true from false stones because either may be free, adherent or embedded. Pulp stones are not confined to inflamed or carious pulps, and enamel is not formed within dental pulp. Importantly, modern ultrastructural studies show morphological overlap and have identified tubules in some so-called false stones.
