The bony partition separating the root sockets of a multirooted tooth is the interradicular septum, also termed interradicular bone. The key feature is that it lies between roots of the same tooth. The interdental septum instead separates the sockets of adjacent teeth. The alveolar crest is the coronal margin of the alveolar process, while the cortical plate forms its outer compact surface. Bundle bone is alveolar bone proper into which periodontal ligament fibres insert; its radiographic representation lining a tooth socket is termed the lamina dura. Loss of interradicular bone in an erupted multirooted tooth may produce furcation involvement.
