During root formation, cells in its alveolar bone-facing region adopt an osteoblast lineage and contribute to developing alveolar bone. Ameloblasts arise from inner enamel epithelium and form enamel, while odontoblasts arise from dental papilla and form dentine. Hertwig's epithelial root sheath guides root shape and induces root odontoblast differentiation but does not normally form alveolar osteoblasts. Cementoblasts are also derived from dental follicle progenitors, but they occupy the root-facing compartment and form cementum rather than alveolar bone. A rigid three-layer description of follicular fate is an oversimplification; spatially related progenitor differentiation is the more defensible formulation.
