Reciprocal signals from these differentiating odontoblasts, together with the newly deposited predentine/dentine matrix, then promote terminal differentiation of preameloblasts and subsequent enamel secretion. This explains why dentinogenesis begins before amelogenesis at the future cusp tips. The dental follicle forms supporting periodontal tissues rather than inducing ameloblasts. The stellate reticulum and outer enamel epithelium are components of the enamel organ but are not the reciprocal mesenchymal inducer. The oral epithelium contributes to early tooth initiation through the dental lamina, not this late cytodifferentiation step.
