Hardness is a material's resistance to scratching or permanent surface indentation. It is commonly assessed using indentation methods such as Vickers, Knoop, Brinell or Rockwell testing. Toughness is the ability to absorb energy before fracture and resist crack propagation. Ductility is the capacity for plastic deformation under tensile loading. Resilience is the energy absorbed during elastic deformation and released on unloading. Fatigue resistance describes resistance to failure under repeated or cyclic stresses. Although hardness can influence the wear behaviour of a restorative material, hardness and wear resistance are not interchangeable properties.
