The lateral, or temporomandibular, ligament is the named principal intrinsic reinforcement of the lateral aspect of the TMJ capsule. Its fibres become taut during mandibular opening and constrain condylar movement; different fibre orientations also help resist excessive inferior and posterior displacement. The sphenomandibular and stylomandibular ligaments are accessory extracapsular ligaments, with the stylomandibular ligament particularly resisting excessive protrusion. The pterygomandibular raphe is a fibrous attachment between buccinator and superior pharyngeal constrictor, not a TMJ ligament. The fibrous capsule encloses the joint but is not itself the named principal ligament. Modern anatomical work debates whether the lateral ligament is fully discrete or part of a lateral capsule-ligament complex, but the conventional examination answer remains the lateral temporomandibular ligament.
