A 62-year-old patient has a painless, lobulated radiolucency between the roots of vital mandibular canine and premolar teeth. Correct answer: BLateral periodontal cyst

The correct answer is B, lateral periodontal cyst. The botryoid odontogenic cyst is the multicystic or lobulated variant of the lateral periodontal cyst. Its characteristic features include development beside vital teeth, often in the mandibular canine-premolar region, and multiple cystic compartments lined by thin non-keratinising epithelium with epithelial plaques and clear cells. It may appear unilocular or multilocular radiographically and has a higher recurrence risk than a conventional lateral periodontal cyst. A radicular cyst is inflammatory and associated with a non-vital tooth. A dentigerous cyst surrounds the crown of an unerupted tooth. An odontogenic keratocyst has a characteristic keratinised lining, while a nasopalatine duct cyst is non-odontogenic and occurs in the anterior maxillary midline.
