A lithium disilicate laminate veneer is dependent on adhesive cementation because its minimally retentive preparation provides little conventional resistance or retention form. Lithium disilicate is a silica-containing glass-ceramic: its fitting surface can be conditioned according to the manufacturer's protocol, commonly using hydrofluoric acid followed by silane or a suitable ceramic primer, and bonded with resin cement. Zirconia is not predictably conditioned by hydrofluoric acid and silane; adhesive zirconia protocols instead generally use micromechanical treatment and an MDP-containing primer or cement. Porcelain-veneered zirconia, metal-ceramic and full gold crowns can obtain substantial retention from a conventional full-crown preparation. A cast metal post and core is likewise not an etchable glass-ceramic restoration. Importantly, a retentive full-coverage lithium disilicate crown does not invariably require adhesive cementation.
