Glass ionomer cement is correct. Its fluoroaluminosilicate glass component provides fluoride ions that are released from the set material. Glass ionomer can also take up fluoride after exposure to sources such as fluoride toothpaste or topical fluoride and subsequently re-release it; this is termed fluoride recharge. Zinc phosphate and zinc polycarboxylate cements do not characteristically provide this fluoride reservoir. Zinc oxide–eugenol is principally used for its sedative and temporary restorative or luting properties, while calcium hydroxide cement is used mainly as a liner because of its high pH and stimulation of hard-tissue responses. Neither has the characteristic fluoride release-and-recharge behaviour tested here.
