Chlorhexidine is a cationic bisbiguanide. Its positive charge promotes interaction with negatively charged bacterial surfaces and acidic membrane phospholipids. This alters membrane permeability, causing leakage of intracellular constituents; at higher concentrations, precipitation of cellular contents contributes to bactericidal activity.
