Fordyce spots are ectopic sebaceous glands within the oral mucosa. They typically appear as multiple small, asymptomatic yellow-white papules, particularly on the buccal mucosa and vermilion or labial mucosa. They are a common normal anatomical variant and do not ordinarily require treatment. Minor salivary gland tumours and lipomas form discrete submucosal swellings rather than multiple superficial papules. Human papillomavirus lesions usually have a papillary or verrucous surface. Pseudomembranous candidosis produces soft white plaques that can generally be wiped away, often leaving an erythematous surface.
