Reduced-enamel-epithelium-derived cells retained against the enamel form the initial junctional epithelium and its epithelial attachment to the tooth. Sulcular epithelium lines the gingival sulcus but does not constitute this initial enamel-attached epithelial compartment. Oral gingival epithelium covers the external gingival surface. The epithelial rests of Serres are remnants of the dental lamina, whereas the epithelial rests of Malassez are derived from Hertwig's epithelial root sheath within the periodontal ligament. These alternative epithelial structures therefore have different locations and developmental origins.
