In the classical account, the primary epithelial band is divided into an internal dental lamina, associated with initiation of the deciduous tooth primordia, and an external vestibular lamina, associated with formation of the oral vestibule. The successional lamina develops subsequently from the dental lamina and therefore is not its co-derivative at this stage. The enamel organ, dental papilla, and inner and outer enamel epithelia are later tooth-germ structures; the dental papilla is also ectomesenchymal rather than epithelial. The general and successional dental laminae are subdivisions associated with tooth generation, not the two classical components of the primary epithelial band. Modern three-dimensional studies show that vestibular epithelial development is more regionally complex, hence the stem's explicit reference to the classical model.
