Cementoblasts are the cells that form cementum. They line the developing root surface, secrete its collagenous and non-collagenous matrix, and support subsequent mineralisation. They principally differentiate from ectomesenchymal progenitor cells within the dental follicle. Ameloblasts form enamel, whereas odontoblasts form dentine. Osteoblasts produce alveolar and other bone rather than cementum. Fibroblasts synthesise connective-tissue matrix, including collagen within the periodontal ligament, but they are not the cells responsible for cementum deposition. The location and function described in the stem therefore uniquely identify cementoblasts.
