Angle's classification is based on the anteroposterior relationship of the first permanent molars. In a Class I relationship, the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first permanent molar aligns with the buccal groove of the mandibular first permanent molar. Its position is mesial to this groove in Class II and distal to it in Class III. Canine relationships can also be described as Class I, II or III clinically, but they are not the original basis of Angle's classification. Second molars and premolars do not define it. Incisor relationships are classified separately in routine UK orthodontic assessment and should not be confused with Angle's molar classification.
