Ductility is the ability of a material to undergo substantial plastic, and therefore permanent, deformation under tensile loading before it fractures. It is commonly assessed using percentage elongation at fracture. Toughness is the total energy absorbed before fracture, represented by the area under the complete stress–strain curve. Hardness is resistance to indentation, scratching or surface penetration. Stiffness is resistance to elastic deformation and is related to Young's modulus. Resilience is the energy absorbed within the elastic range and released when the load is removed. The specification of tensile loading makes ductility the single best answer; plastic deformation under compression is conventionally described as malleability.
