Hydroxyproline helps stabilise the collagen triple helix, while hydroxylysine contributes to glycosylation and subsequent cross-link formation. Deficiency therefore produces structurally defective collagen, causing scurvy with gingival bleeding, perifollicular haemorrhage and impaired wound healing. Vitamin D primarily regulates calcium and phosphate metabolism.
