The cap-shaped epithelial component is the enamel organ, which develops from the oral ectoderm through the dental lamina. Its inner enamel epithelial cells subsequently differentiate into ameloblasts and produce enamel. Neural crest-derived ectomesenchyme is essential for reciprocal signalling during odontogenesis but gives rise to the dental papilla and dental follicle rather than the enamel organ. The dental papilla forms odontoblasts and dental pulp, while the follicle contributes to periodontal supporting tissues. Mesoderm, endoderm and non-specific mesenchyme therefore do not constitute the embryological origin of the enamel organ.
