Erythema nodosum (EN) is the most common form of panniculitis, presenting as tender erythematous nodules on the anterior shins. Histologically, it shows septal panniculitis without vasculitis, with Miescher radial granulomas. Common triggers include streptococcal infection (preceding sore throat), sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease, drugs (sulfonamides, oral contraceptives), and pregnancy. Erythema induratum affects the posterior calves and shows lobular panniculitis. Lupus profundus shows lobular panniculitis with lymphocytic infiltrate.
