Prescribing considerations
- Confirm that the presentation and distribution are consistent with tinea pedis; consider an alternative diagnosis or microbiological assessment if disease is atypical, extensive or unresponsive.
- Advise measures that reduce moisture and transmission.
- Review promptly where there is diabetes, immunosuppression, spreading inflammation or substantial pain.
Contraindications and cautions
- Hypersensitivity to tolnaftate or any component of the selected formulation.
- Do not use in the eyes or on mucous membranes.

Clinical pharmacology
Tolnaftate is a thiocarbamate antifungal that inhibits squalene epoxidation and fungal sterol biosynthesis. Its activity is principally directed against dermatophytes.
