Prescribing considerations

• Traditional herbal registration is based on longstanding use; do not present efficacy as clinically established.
• Confirm that symptoms are compatible with teething. Fever, diarrhoea or systemic illness should not automatically be attributed to teething.
• The product is intended for teething infants and is not recommended below 3 months.

Contraindications and cautions

• Hypersensitivity to matricaria, any Asteraceae/Compositae plant or an excipient.
• Rare hereditary galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
• Use caution in allergy-prone patients and those with asthma because matricaria may precipitate or worsen allergic symptoms.

Monitoring

• Review if symptoms worsen or fail to settle.
• Monitor for rash, urticaria, oral lesions or other hypersensitivity features.
• Consider excessive lactose exposure if diarrhoea follows overuse.
• Report serious or concerning suspected reactions through the Yellow Card Scheme.

Clinical pharmacology

The active tincture is extracted from Matricaria recutita flower using ethanol. A product-specific therapeutic mechanism, pharmacodynamic profile and pharmacokinetic profile have not been established.

Formulation and product differences

• The selected UK preparation is a fine oral powder impregnated with matricaria tincture; it is not administered as a liquid tincture.
• Lactose is the sole listed excipient.
• The powder is supplied in individual laminate sachets.
