Prescribing considerations
- Confirm the diagnosis before treating pigmented, hairy, bleeding, changing or otherwise atypical lesions.
- Match formulation to its licensed indication.
- Assess treatment area, skin integrity, peripheral circulation and risk of accidental exposure or ingestion.
- Consider excipient sensitivities and fire risk with volatile or paraffin-containing formulations.
Contraindications and cautions
- Hypersensitivity to salicylic acid or formulation excipients.
- Occlusal and Bazuka wart products: diabetes or impaired peripheral circulation.
- Wart products: facial, anogenital, intertriginous, inflamed or broken sites, and moles, birthmarks or hairy lesions.
- Ointment: avoid broken or inflamed skin; large-area use and neonatal exposure increase toxicity risk.
Monitoring
- Review local irritation, pain and unintended damage to surrounding skin.
- Reassess if the lesion worsens, bleeds, changes appearance or diagnosis remains uncertain.
- After excessive, prolonged or large-area exposure, assess for salicylism.
Clinical pharmacology
Topical keratolytic activity results from reduced corneocyte adhesion and desquamation of thickened stratum corneum. Percutaneous absorption is possible, although clinically important systemic exposure is unlikely with appropriately localised use.
Formulation and product differences
- The ointment has a paraffin and wool-alcohol base and is licensed for hyperkeratotic and scaling dermatoses; contaminated fabrics can burn more readily.
- Occlusal is a volatile brush-applied cutaneous solution that dries on the wart and is flammable.
- Bazuka Extra Strength Treatment Gel forms an adhesive film and contains volatile, flammable solvents.

Systemic interactions are not expected when these products are used as indicated, but local combinations can matter.
Other topical medicines on the same skin area
Salicylic acid may increase their absorption, so concurrent application to the treated area should be avoided unless specifically advised.
