How does ropivacaine hydrochloride monohydrate work?
Ropivacaine temporarily blocks sodium movement through nerve-cell membranes. This prevents local nerves carrying pain signals; depending on how and where it is given, movement may also be temporarily reduced.

How to take ropivacaine hydrochloride monohydrate
Ropivacaine is not taken by mouth or self-administered. A trained clinician gives it through an epidural catheter, around a nerve, or into tissues near the area requiring pain relief, with monitoring and resuscitation facilities available.
Tell the anaesthetist about medicine allergies, current medicines, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and significant heart, liver, kidney or blood-volume problems.
Remain still as instructed during placement and report unusual sensations or symptoms immediately.
Do not adjust an epidural or nerve-block pump unless specifically instructed.
Protect a numb limb or area from heat, pressure and injury until sensation returns.

Common or expected effects
- Low blood pressure, sometimes causing nausea or light-headedness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache, dizziness or tingling sensations
- Slow or fast heartbeat
- Temporary difficulty passing urine
- Back pain, chills or raised temperature
- Temporary numbness or weakness caused by the intended nerve block
Get urgent medical advice
- Seizures, slurred speech, muscle twitching, ringing in the ears or numbness around the mouth, which may indicate systemic local-anaesthetic toxicity
- Severe low blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm or cardiac arrest
- Breathing difficulty or an unexpectedly high spinal block
- Severe allergic reaction, including facial or throat swelling
- New or persistent weakness, loss of sensation, bladder dysfunction or severe back pain requiring urgent assessment

Ropivacaine is licensed for epidural pain relief during labour. Evidence for other uses in human pregnancy is limited. It crosses the placenta and fetal heart-rate monitoring may be required, so use should be planned by the obstetric and anaesthetic team.
