Prescribing considerations
- Confirm a licensed indication and review all vitamin-containing supplements to assess cumulative exposure.
- Reconcile levodopa therapy and establish whether a dopa-decarboxylase inhibitor is present.
- The selected tablet presentation is not recommended for children.
- Reassess if symptoms persist or worsen.
Contraindications and cautions
- Hypersensitivity to pyridoxine or any product excipient.

Monitoring

- Ask about numbness, paraesthesia, weakness, balance disturbance and other sensory changes during continued treatment.
- For sideroblastic anaemia, monitor the relevant clinical and haematological response.
Clinical pharmacology
Pyridoxine hydrochloride is absorbed gastrointestinally and converted to pyridoxal phosphate and pyridoxamine phosphate. It crosses the placenta, appears in breast milk and is excreted in urine mainly as pyridoxic acid.
Formulation and product differences
- The selected product is an oral, uncoated tablet.
- Its listed excipients include calcium hydrogen phosphate, maize starch, sodium lauryl sulphate and magnesium stearate.
- It should be protected from light and moisture; storage instructions can differ between products.

Penicillamine can alter pyridoxine availability and may increase requirements.
