How to take povidone iodine
This preparation is applied by a doctor or trained member of staff before an eye procedure. It is used on the skin around the eye and ocular surface, then thoroughly rinsed away with sterile sodium chloride solution. The nozzle must not touch the eye, and the container is discarded after use.
For ophthalmic surface use only; never inject into or around the eye.
Do not use if the sachet is already open or damaged.
Food does not affect this locally applied preparation.

- Reported local effects, with frequency not known, include eye irritation or redness, surface inflammation, dryness and temporary yellow colouring of the conjunctiva.
- Contact dermatitis may cause redness, itching or blisters; temporary brown skin staining can also occur.

- Severe hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis, including breathing or swallowing difficulty, hives, collapse or facial, lip, tongue or throat swelling.
- Repeated or prolonged exposure may affect thyroid function, particularly in premature babies and neonates.
- Very rare corneal calcium deposits have been reported with phosphate-containing eye drops in people with significantly damaged corneas.
