How does potassium citrate work?
Absorbed citrate is metabolised to bicarbonate, increasing urinary pH. Less acidic urine can reduce burning during urination. Increased urinary citrate binds calcium and reduces conditions favouring calcium oxalate and uric acid crystallisation.

How to take potassium citrate
Follow the instructions for the specific formulation.
Swallow modified-release tablets whole with sufficient liquid, with a meal or shortly afterwards. Do not crush, chew or dissolve them, and avoid alcohol because it can disrupt modified release.
Dissolve granules fully in cold water. Taking them with or after food and using adequate water may reduce stomach irritation.
Shake the oral mixture before use, dilute it well with water and take it after food.
For modified-release tablets, follow the clinician's advice on fluid intake, dietary salt and monitoring.
